Time To Go Home

March 3, 2003
The snow cleared and it was time to bring the trailer home. Now I had to convert the salvage title back to a full title. I needed to learn fast. We were going on our shakedown cruise to Myrtle Beach at the end of the month.
Once you create a salvage title in Ohio the title will always show that it was once salvage. This was OK with me. I figure if I ever sell it, I'll just show the pictures. I have no doubt that I could get more for the trailer now than what the insurance company's settlement was. It is not leaving the family anyway.
The Highway Patrol operates inspection stations. You send $50 to Columbus and they send you a coupon to use at the inspection station. I ran into difficulty because I could not find a location with an appointment available before we left for Myrtle Beach. I was able to get an appointment at a station sixty miles away.
The inspection stations deal mostly with autos and motor cycles. They are concerned that people might use stolen parts so they want proof of where material was purchased, serial numbers, receipts. The problem is that they want to apply the same rules to RV's.
It is hard to show proof of origin on aluminum purchased a decade ago and hand made to fit in place. CAYO's helped us put together as much information as possible with receipts for as much as we could find. I was armed to the teeth and ready to go for the inspection.
My fate was in the hands of a mechanic and a State Trooper. They made me wait in the lobby while they inspected the whole trailer inside and out. They verified the serial numbers and my receipts."You're all set." "We can't tell where the damage was". (I decided this was not the place to show the family photo album).
I walked next door and had the title converted immediately. I put my license plates back on and called my insurance agent. The same company that totaled my trailer a few months earlier now was insuring it again.
We made it to Myrtle Beach in time.
This is what we awoke to in West Virginia on the way back home. Driving in that snow is a campfire tale.
